Avatar Drabble Request Meme!

It's quite simple.

1) Request a drabble using the following format!
Pairing: [any pairing of your choice! if you'd prefer to request a character or group, feel free to change 'pairing' to 'character(s)'.]
Rating: [your preferred rating. example: if you aren't wanting any extreme making out and/or bloody violence, list your rating as PG. Nothing above R, though, please.]
Prompt: [can be anything. A word, a situation, a song, poetry, etc. Be creative!]

2) Look at the other requests, and fulfill any that strike your fancy! When doing so, in the title of your comment, please write:
[title of your drabble] (pairing/character, rating)

That's really all there is to it. :D

Is it okay to request/write drabbles that deal with events occurring in episodes that haven't officially aired yet? (such as: Western Air Temple, The Firebending Masters, and The Boiling Rock)
As of right now, yes. But please post a spoiler warning at the beginning of the drabble. That way, readers can scroll past easily if wanting to remain unspoiled. But what about after these episodes air? As a sign of common courtesy, please still make a quick mention of any spoilers for all episodes aired this week. Any drabbles/requests that do not follow these rules will be deleted!
Are any pairings not allowed?
Nope! You can request anything and everything!
Even slash/femslash/incest/etc?
Yep! Seriously, don't hesitate. If other people don't like it, they don't have to read it/write for it. Simple as that.
What if I'm wanting a purely friendshippy drabble (as in, nothing romantic?)
No problem! Just make sure to state that in your request.
Am I allowed more than one request?
Definitely! That's what's going to keep this going. Come back again and again!
If I have more than one request, should I post them all in one comment?
No. Please, make a different comment for each separate request. This makes it easier for people to reply to a prompt, as well as for archiving purposes.
If I make a request, do I HAVE to fill one?
It certainly would be nice of you to. After all, this meme won't amount to much without participation. But it's not required, and don't feel pressured to keep your number of requests and number of drabbles equal. This is supposed to be fun!
Uh oh! A request I want to write for has already been filled!
No worries! There's no limit on how many people can write for one request.
ZOMG! Someone's requesting [insert pairing here]! I hate that stupid pairing! Can I cause a ruckus over it?
Please don't. People like what they like -- nothing you say or do is going to change anyone's mind. Basically, if you wanna get mad, then do it somewhere else. Any rude comments or flames are going to be dealt with severely.
Are crossovers with other fandoms allowed?
No, not this time. Sorry!
Can I pimp this meme at my community/journal/website/etc?
Are you kidding? PIMP THE HELL OUT OF IT. Get your friends involved!
When does this end?
Never! Well, maybe not, but let's keep it going as long as we can! I'm hoping it can last through this week, what with all the frenzy over the finale. We shall see!

[identity profile] 2008-07-13 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing with Toph, Sokka thinks one day, is that she is a tomboy.

He can deal with that, after all it's not as though he wants to date a girly-girl who only cares about how she looks, and boys.

It's just with that tomboyish attitude of hers, she has gotten good at hiding her emotions. Thus, Sokka has no idea where he stands with the earthbender.

It's only been a day since their first kiss, and Toph is acting as though nothing has happened between them. Sokka isn't looking for a big declaration of love or anything (they aren't quite there yet), but it would be nice to know where they're going from here on out.

Are they boyfriend and girlfriend now? Has she forgotten about it all ready? Does she want to do it again? And if she does, how soon should they do it again? Should they let Katara and Aang know about the kiss? Should they date in secret?

He has more questions than he has answers for, and what irks him the most is he doesn't know how to bring up the subject with Toph.

"Sokka?" Well, speak of the devil. He gives Toph a small smile, while butterflies flutter nervously in the pit of his stomach.

She returns his smile, and hooks her fingers through his, intertwining their hands together.

"Thank you for not saying anything to Katara and Aang this morning about what happened yesterday." And she sounds so small here, and not like the tough, sarcastic bender he has gotten to know. It occurs to Sokka that maybe Toph is shy as well in situations like these. Maybe she's as confused as he is.

"No problem, it's none of their business anyways."

He leans towards her and gives her a small peck on the cheek. "I- I really like you, Toph, and if you want, we can go slow."

She nods. "I'd like that, but you're going to have to be patient with me. I don't do so well with mushy feelings or romance."

"If you'd like, I'd wait patiently for you forever."

Sorry this ended up being more of a ficlet than a drabble- I was shooting for a hundred words or so, but we can see how that went. ^^

[a history of kisses] (zuko/katara, pg)

[identity profile] 2008-07-13 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The first time they kiss, Katara vehemently denies the implications that she likes him, and tells him it was purely to see if he was still alive. Because he has been knocked down badly by Aang, and she is worried about him.

He buys it because 1) Katara would never like him like *that* in a million years, and 2) it makes sense. He thinks he'd die teaching and practicing with the airbender as well.

Their second kiss, Zuko initiates because he wants the waterbender to shut up. She's yelling at him like there's no tomorrow, and he's feeling pretty angry towards her. So, naturally, he crushes her body towards his, and silences her tirade. Katara is left speechless for the rest of the day.

Zuko smirks at his resourcefulness, but what he doesn't count on is feeling Katara's warm lips on his all day. Like a ghost's whisper floating in the wind, he can't get the kiss out of his mind.

The person she's seeing now in front of her, after all of these years, is hardly the broody boy she remembers being her enemy, then her friend.

"So, the years have treated you well," he looks straight into her, his golden eyes as fierce as ever, but also so very warm. Katara can feel herself getting lost in their depths.

"They have been kind to you as well," she has dreamed of seeing him again, but she doesn't think anything could've prepared her for the real thing because, dear goodness, he's standing in front of her, and all she can do is stand frozen with her mouth gaping open like an idiot.

He comes closer, and takes her hands into his. "I have a question for you. Did you miss you as much as I missed you?" And she doesn't see him close those final inches between them, and press his lips onto hers, all she can feel is his arms around her, and his warm lips moving in rhythm with hers.

Yes! Her mind screams, I've missed you more than anything.

Out of all their kisses, and of all the kisses since the invention of kissing, none have made her feel as warm and happy as when they finally found each other again.

Her father had sent for the family, and Mai had escaped to the roof to get away from packing and watching her brother. She had the other message cylinder with her. She opened it, reading in Ty Lee's bubbly handwriting about her impromptu trip and her new friends.

Mai wondered if the circus would have room for a knife-thrower and had to admit, that Ty Lee was brave for running away. She wished Ty Lee would come back, though, to take her away from the boredom, like some kind of hero from a tale.

Under The Moonlight [Zuko/Katara, PG]

[identity profile] 2008-07-14 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't unusual, lately, for them to stay up and talk long after everyone else had gone to bed. Sokka would wake sometimes and hear the lilt of his sister's voice and the quiet rumble that belonged to Zuko in the few moments before he would roll over and go back to sleep (to be honest, he didn't much care what they did so long as they weren't cranky in the morning—though he didn't think Aang agreed).

It was on a night like that, when no one was awake to hear them, that their conversation somehow turned to death. Katara was talking about all the places she wanted to go before she died, all the people she’d like to meet, when Zuko interrupted with, “I just want to fall in love before I die.”

They both froze as Zuko blinked and realized what he’d said. He mentally cursed himself for being so damn vulnerable—it was the lack of sleep—when he heard a timid voice ask, “But what about Mai?”

He frowned slightly and shook his head, rubbing at the back of his neck. “Mai . . . Mai was . . . a distraction. I cared about her, I guess, but it wasn’t love. Not really.”

“Do you think you’ll ever fall in love?”

Zuko turned his head to keep from looking at her. “I hope so.”

Gently, tentatively, a small, soft hand came to rest on his, and a hand leaned on his shoulder. Just as cautiously, he lifted an arm and curled it around her waist. They both relaxed as she sighed and snuggled closer; no other words were spoken that night, abandoned in favor of the light from the moon and the stars and the shriek from Aang when he found them still cuddled together in the morning.

Hopefully that was okay >_>

Prompt: If I believe in one thing, just one thing...I believe in her-Doctor Who

[identity profile] 2008-07-13 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Carolyn, omg, before I saw it was you I was going to put something like "OMG, I love Doctor Who" at the end (but you already know that.)

He heard the lightning before he felt it; a dramatic, ominous buzzing, and as it came closer time slowed down. The crystals on the stone cavern walls glittered more slowly in the lights from the firebenders blasts, the sound of the water rushing and the rocks shifting under Toph’s steady hand slowed to distant thunder.

Then it hit and he could feel it alright. It started in the center of his back and spread outwards, replacing the cooling, calming sensation of the Avatar state, instead there were thousands of tiny red-hot fingers clawing outwards all over his body. He could feel consciousness slipping away from him. And the falling….that was the worst part. Airbenders didn’t fall.

This is it, Aang thought, everything for nothing. Just then, as he was about to give up hope and consciousness in one fell swoop he heard something else. It was the rush of water, like all the oceans rising up to meet and crashing down around them, more powerful than a hurricane. And above all those sounds, the scream of someone he knew better than anyone, ever. The person who he’d let down but knew would never let him down. Katara.

Out of the corner of his eye, quickly being erased by the darkness encroaching on his vision he saw her, riding a wave and heading straight for him. He could hear his heart slowing down, thudding in his mind, but with that sight it sped up a little more, he could take in one more breath. But the darkness was too much after all, as he finally slipped all the way into that unknown place between death and dreams, and felt her arms enclose him tight, he had one more thought. Just one. If I believe in one thing, just one thing…I believe in her.

There you go. Eat your heart out.

Prompt: I Dare You

Open If You Know How To See; Toph/Aang, PG-13

[identity profile] 2008-07-14 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Totally not a drabble, since it´s 800+ words, but I needed them to make the thing a satisfying PG-13. Aang and Toph are about 16 here.

“I dare you.” And that put an end to all his protests, for even in the three years since the war their little tribe had never ceased to take dares as the most serious of challenges. The heat from his blush made her toes press harder into the ground, but her voice stayed steady when she continued. “And don´t give me any guff about Sweetness seeing and disapproving, you know she and Sparky are taking their own sweet time about getting back tonight, and you know just why, too.”

“Toph! You can´t think anything is happening between Katara and Zuko, after they´ve told us so many times that they´re just good friends!”

“Don´t be so blind, Twinkle Toes! And don´t try to change the subject, are you taking my dare or not?”

He thought about this an uncomfortably long time, and she tried to forget how thoughtful the war had made them all. This was a moment for her to just do, without thinking, and she wouldn´t let him take it away.

“Only if I get to give one,” was his eventual reply.

“Done deal. Now strip.”

“Toph! At least turn around.”

“It´s not like I´ll be able to see anything, genius.” But she obliged anyway.

And she did see, through her own mode of seeing, how he also turned his back; how gingerly he set down his staff; how quickly he took off the large-wide thing he wore on top; how he hesitated and then danced around pulling off his bottoms. When he turned back to her she knew that he´d left on that last layer that he wore even while waterbending or just plain swimming, but the dare hadn´t necessarily included naked so she didn´t complain. Not that she didn´t want to, but Toph Bei Fong understood as well as anyone about choosing your words carefully and expecting them to be followed to the letter.

“There, are you satisfied?” he asked almost immediately.

“I can´t see them yet, so no.” She walked directly over to him and held out her hand, demanding without a word that he finish what he´d started. He took it, sighed, and placed her palm at the top of his head. She lightly ran it up and down his brow, then used her fingertips to brush the lines that made his first arrow, trailing them down past where it ended to push in his nose.

She said, “Are you ready for me to see the rest?”

He nodded, a movement so slight it only resonated in her toes. But then he pulled her hand back up his forehead and slid the palm across his shaved head. When it reached the neck, she moved herself around until she was standing behind him, and disengaged their hands. Her toes curled involuntarily as she felt his heartbeat speed up. She trailed her fingers down his nape to his back, then lightly feathered them to the left and to the right, following the slightly raised bands across his shoulderblades and back to his spine. She smiled to herself when he shivered, a smile she knew he couldn´t see that revealed motives she was sure he hadn´t guessed. She gripped his arms and let her callused palms slide down them in a spiral, feeling the tattoos and his goosebumps at the same time. When she was holding his hands she pulled first one then the other behind his back, holding them together with her left hand while tracing his second and third arrows with her right thumbnail. And her feet wanted to dance when they felt his heartbeat beginning to pound through the ground to them.

[The Sum of Us] (Suki/Toph/Sokka, G)

[identity profile] 2008-07-16 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Spoilers for TBR, I guess?

After a few days, Suki has figured out the way they work.

Toph and Sokka are glued to each other. They laugh at jokes nobody else finds funny. They plot and create adventure of the most ordinary things. Toph blushes when she ribs Sokka or punches him in the arm. Sokka laughs and looks at Suki with a shrug.

“He’s totally oblivious,” Suki says to herself, and groans.

After a few more days, Toph sits her down.

“Don’t tell him,” she says. “I know you know. But, please, not yet?”

“I promise,” Suki says. She pauses. The silence is thick and Toph kicks at the ground.

“What was that about?” Sokka asks when Toph is gone. Suki only shakes her head.

After a few weeks, they have figured out the way they work together.

Toph and Sokka and Suki are glued to each other. It happened as the best things do, the gradual pull of unbidden affection and time. Sokka and Suki are kisses and hands and exhilaration, Sokka and Toph are laughter and sly words and the comfort of the familiar; Suki and Toph are all newness, sparring substituting the more difficult things, too much in common to have have kept them apart for long. But all together, they are more.

The three of them lie under the stars, and Toph nudges Suki gently in the arm for a smile in return. If she is in the middle for a while longer, it doesn’t matter as much as it could.

[Miscalculation] [Long Feng; G]

[identity profile] 2008-07-14 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Long Feng was never one to take defeat lightly. Having his plans foiled by a group of children, and being thrown into a prison cell was one thing, but it was only temporary, he knew, as the Dai Li were on his side.

But then, after allying himself with the Princess Azula, expecting to be the one doing the betraying, only to have her betray him first...that was something completely different.

On that day, she stole everything from him. His power, his moral, everything he'd worked his entire life for, building himself up higher and higher until he was second only to the king...all of that was stolen in one fell sweep, and he was left with nothing, not even the meanest pauper could compare to his sorry state.

Sitting in a dank prison cell, betrayed by his very own Dai Li agents whom he had once controlled, Long Feng knew that he had never sunken so low as he did now. He kept asking himself, how? How had this happened? How did he allow himself to become so shortsighted when it came to the Princess Azula?

He had underestimated her, and that had cost him everything.

Then again, perhaps Princess Azula had underestimated him. Leaving Ba Sing Se in the capable hands of Joo Dee must have seemed like an excellent idea to her at the time. Long Feng, however, knew better. He knew he was meant for things far greater than mere mortals, far greater than the Fire Nation Princess. Perhaps things did have a way of coming full circle after all, he figured to himself, as he looked at the woman standing before him in his cell.

"Joo Dee, the Earth King invites you to Lake Laogai."

[Therapy Session] [Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko - G]

[identity profile] 2008-07-14 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Sokka had never been more happy to pull out his fake beard and mustache. The rest of the group was really getting on his nerves. Zuko was annoyed with Toph for her continued pranks on him. Toph was furious with Aang for abandoning water and earthbending to focus only on firebending. Aang was upset with Katara for continuing to be suspicious of his new firebending teacher. And Katara was angry at Zuko for pretty much everything he'd ever done in his entire life.

The others didn't even seem to notice he had gone, they were all too busy glaring at each other silently to notice any absences or abnormalities. He took a big breath, preparing his therapist voice, and then cleared his throat loudly. "It seems like you're all in need of a therapy session."

Aang, Katara, and Zuko all turned towards him. Aang simply looked confused. Katara shot him daggers. Zuko seemed to just look horrified at the voice and the fake beard. Toph didn't turn but firmly stomped the ground, and suddenly the rock beneath him stubbed his toes. She was the first to speak. "Don't think for a second that I'll put up with any of that nonsense!"

"Yeah, Sokka... That didn't work so well the last time we tried it, remember? And there's nothing even wrong here, we're all perfectly fine!" Aang insisted, looking to the others for confirmation.

Katara and Zuko looked incredulously at him, but Toph flopped to the ground and leaned against a boulder. "I'm with Twinkle Toes. Everything is fine. Don't talk in that stupid voice."

"Yeah! Toph is right. And lose the beard, would you? You're reminding me of my uncle. This whole thing is just weird!" Zuko exclaimed, waving his arms around. "Who asked you to get into our business, anyway?"

Katara's fury was fueled by Zuko's rhetorical question. "Yeah! Don't you have yourself to worry about!? Leave us alone."

Sokka backed up, holding his hands out in front of him. "Hey, hey. I mean no harm. Just want to smooth everything over, right? And hey! You're my sister, you're supposed to be on my side!"

Katara started, but Aang cut her off. "Katara is an excellent judge of character! She picks her sides well! Just take off the beard, Sokka, and go to bed already."

Sokka sighed, and ripped off the fake beard. "Fine, fine. Pretend you didn't need me!" He turned and began to walk away, sneaking around a long way to hide behind a pillar and watch their talk. The four of them were all being friendly now, talking trash about him together. He frowned, wishing they could like each other without having to use him to ridicule.

"Oh well," he said to himself as he made his way to his bed, "Small price to pay."

Mild spoilers for the finale, nothing terribly specific. Introspective-y, Aang POV.

In the darkness, shortly before his showdown with the Fire Lord, no, whatever else it was he was calling himself these days, Aang wonders what life would be like if he ran away again.

That thought is quickly squashed however, because he knows that this is his destiny, to kill Ozai, to bring peace back to the world. He is the Avatar, and to run away again would only cause more pain and suffering.

He blinks again, staring up at the starry night, sleepless and unsure about what the next day will bring. He hasn't been haunted by nightmares this time, but even still, he is nervous.

He rolls onto his side, and catches a glimpse of Katara, fast asleep with her back turned away from him, her tangle of hair going every which way over her sleeping bag.

He smiles at her, and with a strange sense of peace, he is finally able to close his eyes and rest, his dreams filled with thoughts of her and the peace he wants to give, to the world, and to her.

[Effort] [Mai/Katara, PG]

[identity profile] 2008-07-14 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
When Mai and Ty Lee joined their group, Katara couldn't help but develop a fascination for the pair. Ty Lee was absolutely wonderful and quickly became a good friend, though her ability to take away bending still made Katara nervous. Mai was quiet and mysterious. She held herself high and radiated a confidence that Katara had never been able to resist. And the fact that she could more than hold her own in a fight did not help matters.

She could tell that Mai was watching her, too. What was she thinking? Did she enjoy the waterbender for who she was, or could she just not get over an exotic beauty? The Fire Nation was mostly pale eyes and skin, but was a darker complexion and bright eyes really that thrilling?

As if she needed any more reason to dislike him, Zuko seemed to share her feelings on Mai. She knew they'd been together before, but she had been beginning to hope that maybe it was all over.

Katara knew that she didn't really have much of a chance. She barely even knew Mai, and she didn't see the older girl ever making much effort to get to know her better. And if she wouldn't do that, was she really worth fighting for?

So Katara made half the effort. She'd start up conversations, try to include Mai in whatever they were doing. But the vocal interest was never returned. Just lingering glances and the occasional slipped smile.

Zuko was willing to make all of the effort. And since he was willing to do the work for the both of them, it seemed it was an easy choice for Mai to choose him.

Katara tried to convince herself she was glad, that she didn't want a relationship that would be so difficult on all levels. But she was upset, because apparently she wasn't worth the extra energy. If Mai had initiated connection, even just once, Katara would have gladly been hers.

It had been raining for days now, as if the sky was trying to do its part in putting out the Fire Nation. They were mostly protected underneath the cliffs of the Western Air Temple, but the earth was saturated and all the excess rainwater was falling into the temple.

It was nearing the end, now. Sokka could feel it. After a century of oppressing the rest of the world, the Fire Nation was going to fall.

It wasn't that hard to figure out, really. He knew it the moment Azula came to them. He knew he shouldn't trust her, not after everything she'd done, but even Zuko was baffled at this new Azula before them. Things were going badly on the Fire Nation's side, and she said that she just wanted to be on the winning one.

"Her hopes are on the throne," Zuko told Sokka in private, looking away with nervous eyes. "She thought that Father would win. But now that she sees he probably won't, she's come to our side in hopes of attaining it anyway. I can't let that happen." The warrior nodded, thinking Zuko was probably right, but feeling weird about the whole situation anyway.

The Fire Nation Princess was an absolute mess. She wouldn't really talk to anyone, though that came as no surprise. She remained in her room for what seemed like days at a time. Sokka couldn't contain his curiosity, he had to find out what she was doing.

It was easy enough to sneak over there. Her room was separate from the rest, by her choice, but it wasn't that odd to go past in on the way to his own chambers. Sokka looked around, making sure nobody else was there, and stepped closer to her door.

It turned out that it was open a crack, the sound of rushing rainwater echoing from her room into the hallway. He tried to peek through, but couldn't really see much of anything. It was enough, however, to determine that her back was to the door, and that he was marginally safe to inch it open further.

He proceeded to do so, tense with anxiety and praying that the hinges weren't squeaky. He went as slowly as he possibly could, and he got the opening a few centimeters wider before the door began to creak. If he had been smart, he would have run to hide, but he stood frozen in the doorway, hoping upon hope that she hadn't heard.

Azula did hear it. She cocked her head, the first movement he'd seen from her. But she got up to look out the window, struggling to make out any sound but the draining water, apparently wrong about where the sound had come from. Sokka's breath rushed out of his nose in relief.

As she was standing at the window he could see her a lot better, her head turned so he could see her profile. She looked awful, really. It was clear she'd been crying for a long time, as if she and the storm clouds were one. There was a permanent look of confusion and frustration on her face. Golden eyes were narrowed, but her lips were fixed in a sad frown. He felt like he shouldn't think of her as so tragically beautiful just then, but he couldn't help himself.

What would she do if he entered to comfort her? Would she be receptive, let him hold her and soothe her pain? Could he smooth her brows and light up her eyes?

No. He knew exactly what she'd do: she'd try to kill him. He'd be on fire or electrocuted before he knew it. He couldn't just waltz in there and expect her to be a different person.

But he could work on it. He could slowly become nice to her, try to get her to open up. He wanted to heal her, he wanted to help her become someone she'd never been. For a moment, he thought maybe if he made her better again, the rain would stop.

Okay, Sokka, he thought to himself, That's just stupid. She doesn't control the weather.

But he smiled to himself as he made his way to his own room, ready to set out a course of action for Operation: Azula.

"Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while." -The Princess Bride

For [ profile] moon_destiny Great request by the way! I had fun writing this, and almost cried! I didn't give exact hints to if it was avatarverse or AU, I can see it either way. Hope you like!

Katara sat there holding his hand.
She never before felt such a strong need to pray to someone. But in this moment as she felt all the life being sucked out of her and her true love drifting farther and farther away from the land of the living she wanted something to lean on that was bigger then herself.
But she didn't believe in a god, so she couldn't pray. She had nothing. Nothing but there true love. Hers and Zuko's stronger and purer then anyones love had ever and would ever be.
"Zuko,?" She whispered. "You can't leave me. Dont! I love you to much!"
Katara laid her head down onto his chest.
His heart beat was slow, but there.
Soon the sound of her muffled crying filled her ears and then she noticed she couldn't hear his heart any more.
She sat up.
"NO!" She screamed. She put her lips on his, hopefully not for the last time and even more hopefully not again under these pretenses.
She pushed all her air into him.
She tried to resuscitate him.
"Please," she sobbed. "Don't go, Zuko." Katara wept.
Katara laid onto his chest to hopefully hear his heartbeat, and silent tears trickled down onto him.
It was awhile before she felt something touch her hair. Stroking it gently.
She felt like she had been asleep, felt vulnerbal like you did when you cried and mourned.
"Katara?" A whisper faintly fell to her ears.
"Zuko?" Tears of love fell off her face.
"Why are you crying my love?"
"Oh Zuko, I'm so glad you're okay."
She kissed him gently.
"I told you," He whispered. "Death can't stop true love."

Zuko thought he'd gotten over needing approval when he left home to join the Avatar. He thought he'd found his own destiny, and that he was the only one he needed to impress with it. But with the war over and being back in the Fire Nation, Zuko found himself needing validation from the Fire Lord once more.

He still trembled as he approached those large doors, fearing who was inside. He tried to shake the feeling, but after fifteen years of fearing the Fire Lord, he just wasn't able to. The guards, recognizing him, instantly opened the entrance to him, and he began his long walk between large pillars to approach the Fire Lord's throne.

There was a tightness in his abdomen that he tried to quell, and he swallowed thickly as he came to the end of the path and bowed before his ruler. "Fire Lord, I would like permission to speak with you. It's Prince Zuko."

His nose was still to the ground when he heard the booming, mirthful chuckle. "Zuko," he said, voice smiling, "Please. Get up and join me. And don't call me that."

The prince did as he was told, and the fire around the throne died down to allow him to jump up and stand next to it. "Sorry, Uncle. I just wanted to show you proper respect." His head was hung, but he had a look of determination on his hidden face. Iroh stood from his seat and touched his nephew's shoulder gently.

"I appreciate that, but it makes me feel as if we are distant when you act so formally. But it's alright, no need to apologize. Tell me, what did you wish to speak to me about?"

Zuko looked up and his uncle was still smiling warmly at him. He began to speak, wanting nothing but to get the weight off his chest, but faltered. "I... We..." The hand on his shoulder squeezed tightly. "Don't be so nervous, Zuko. It's just me."

He smiled weakly back at Iroh, and continued. "We just haven't talked a lot. Not since I... I did some horrible things, Uncle. I betrayed you. And I can't do anything to take it back. But I've changed! I've really changed this time. I finally listened to you, and things worked out. I wrote my own destiny. I gave myself honor by helping Avatar Aang learn firebending, and helping to take down my father. I thought I was done needing approval from others. But I've realized... I need it. I need it from you. I can't tell if that makes me weak or not. But you were the real father to me. I hope I've made you proud."

His head dropped again, fearing to make eye contact as if it would make this all the more real if his uncle was disappointed in him. He grew nervous as he got no reply. Holding back nervous tears, he asked, "Uncle, I think I have to know... Do I make you proud?"

Before he knew it, large arms were surrounding him, holding him tightly. "Yes, Zuko. I have watched your growth, and I have seen what a large change you've made. After all my brother put you through, you emerged a good man. If I could only be proud of one person in my whole life, it would be you."

Zuko sighed and smiled in relief, and as the tension left him he let the tears fall. Iroh released him, and looked him in the eye. "However, I really wish you wouldn't have sided with your sister back then. I always warned you she was crazy." The stern eyes were contrasted with a bright smile, and Zuko could do nothing but laugh.

[Vanity] [Katara/Toph; K+]

[identity profile] 2008-07-15 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Katara never wondered what it was like to be Toph. Often she felt pity for the girl, thinking it so difficult for her to be blind, never seeing the beauty of the world surrounding her. Occassionally the thoughts would cross her mind on how uncivilized she behaved, not acting like a proper girl should, and looking down at her for that. Sometimes, she would feel just a stab of relief in the fact that, because of her disability, Toph couldn't care less about her looks, and Katara had no one to contend with in the beauty department.

Certainly Toph was an asset to their group, of that there was no denying. No one else could have taught Aang earthbending, and how many times did she get them out of tight situations? She always came through for them, and in return, they came through for her.

No, Katara never thought it a big deal that Toph was blind, because, after all, it never bothered Toph. They were always forgetting she couldn't see, treating her like a member of the family, and Katara knew Toph appreciated that more than anything else, because the last thing the Earthbender ever wanted was to be pitied.

But trying to be Toph? No, no, no. That belonged to the stuff of nightmares, where you woke up with your heart thumping madly against your chest, cold sweat covering your brow, and your breath coming in short pants because for a moment, just a moment, you believed that you would be forever blind.

And in a nightmare like that, those rare ones that always came along when she least expected them to, she would see Toph standing before her, eyes like frozen jade, watching as though she could see every drop of blood falling out of her irises. And she would cross her arms in contempt, as Katara, on her knees, gasps like someone is ripping out her heart, her vision slowly turning black, and when the last ray of light is shut out, she would hear the Earthbender hiss in a voice that sends chills down her spine, "Who's the wretched one now?"

And always, always, she would wake up with her heart playing a wild tatoo against her ribcage, the tears already spilling out of her eyes (and in panic she checks to make sure they aren't blood), because she remembers, she remembers what had started her blindness, what had caused her orbs to rip and tear and drown in their own pool of blood, and all she can do is sit on the floor and cry, and cry, like she's never cried before.

For you see, in her dreams, those ones she had so rarely, her destruction came about because of her own limelight which blinded her until she got burnt.

[Believe] [Mai/Zuko, PG]

[identity profile] 2008-07-16 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)

Mai sat nearly lifelessly in her cell, head lolled against the cool stone wall and arms shackled at her sides. She rarely let it show that she cared about anything before, and being imprisoned wasn't about to change that. She longed to do something, anything, but she couldn't move around much with her wrists chained. So instead she sat, and tried not to think about anything.

It was hard. She wanted to know where Ty Lee was, if she was okay. Which of them had committed the greater crime? Or were they deemed to be equal in their punishment? She hoped that least this was the worst punishment, so that she could be assured that Ty Lee was still alive. She probably was.

And what had this all been for? Zuko. Her Zuko. Her angry prince who had left her with only a letter. Zuko, who was at this very moment helping the Avatar to bring down the Fire Nation. Was he right in doing so? She wasn't even sure anymore. Perhaps it was best that she had betrayed Azula, if she didn't know which side she was on.

If she had to choose right then, it would again be Zuko's. She betrayed Azula at the time because she loved him, not because she believed he was on the right side. But besides loving him, she also found herself believing in him. To leave home, to leave everything he'd worked for... It must be the right thing. It must be that Ozai needed to be stopped.

If she didn't believe in him or his cause, what hope did she have? Here she only had his memory, and all she could give him was her prayers that he was on the winning side. If he won, she would soon be free and be able to be with him. If he lost, she would rot here forever knowing his punishment would be death.

So she sat there, day after day, remembering her rogue prince and hoping to Agni that he and the Avatar came out on top.
